K-2 created mixed media hearts to spread the Hedke love throughout the community. The students used liquid glue and tissue paper to create their collages. This allowed them to explore interesting texture in art making. After they were dry the students found hidden shapes with metallic markers. We were all very impressed with the results.

Students in grades K-2 are creating fun penguins. We did a bit of research to learn more about these playful friends and then we created them for ourselves. The penguins were completed with oil pastels to show Value from light to dark.
Check out the second grade and kindergarten galleries for more examples! The lower elementary students are creating abstract evergreens in the style of author and artist Eric Carle. We read many Eric Carle books in the artroom. His illustrations are unique and eye catching. Each one is a mixed media collage with many layers and colors. The students used crayon rubbings covered in paint to make their own collage paper. They then cut their paper into progressively smaller strips to build their trees. A marker trunk and some free form decorations were the final steps. I love how each one turned out so differently even with universal instructions.
A zentangle is an extremely relaxing type of advanced doodling. Students were reflective while they created zentangles in the shape of feathers. Classes discussed the importance and symbolism of feathers in Native American culture. The students used line, shape, and contrast to complete these beautiful works. More can be seen in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade gallery's.
Students in 4th and 5th grade also used collage to create a birch tree forest landscapes. It was a time consuming process but the results were beautiful and unique. Hedke hangs our art show at the Trenton Board of Education building over the summer months. So, the art from last year was taken down this fall. I am very proud of every student's work, but these are just a few that really stood out last year.
The fall harvest is upon us and the students read/listened to stories about the harvest moon and garden vegetables. After discussing the many changes that take place in nature during fall harvest, kindergarten through second grade students created their own harvests and harvest moons. They learned about shading and creating silhouettes. Here are some examples of the harvest moons. You can see more on the first grade page of the student gallery.
The Dot by Peter Reynolds is a book that people of all ages can learn from and enjoy. In this book a young artist discovers that creativity starts with just making a single mark. To start this year we will be getting students started exploring their own creativity with the creation of their own dots. Check out the 4th grade and kindergarten galleries to view more student artwork. |
